Hundreds of students and staff from Kingswood College got into
their red suits for a Santa Dash through the school grounds.
More than 200 people dressed as Santas, elves or angels for the
event in aid of former Kingswood College pupil Sam Formby.
Sam, who lives in Scarisbrick and is now 21, suffered a brain
haemorrhage at 16 and was left unable to move.
He had two major operations and spent five weeks in intensive care
at Walton Neurological Centre. Sam was unable to walk without a lot
of assistance so spent most of his time in an electric wheelchair.
But four years on from his brain haemorrhage, Sam completed a five
Kilometre race on a borrowed hand-bike. And instead of keeping the
£400 he raised to buy his own hand-bike to compete in more
marathons, he donated the money to Hettinga House Hospice in
Ormskirk.
The Scarisbrick school has been raising money for the Sam Formby
Appeal to collect £3500 towards a custom-made hand-bike of his
own.
Mr Borowski said: '' Sam has made a lot of progress and has
enormous courage. He was introduced to hand cycle racing and the
school has been raising funds for his hand bike. We wanted to raise
£2000 but we've managed to raise £2600 and our target
is now £3000.''
The money came from donations and a number of events, including the
Santa Dash.
Mr Borowski said: ''There were about 200 children dashing
around in Santa costumes, it was a great event.''
Lynn Massam, Finance Manager for Kingswood College, said: Sam is a
remarkable young man. We've had a lot of sponsored events for
the Appeal, we've had carol singers at Tescos in Kew and a
mufti day in November, where all the children brought in a pound to
wear their own clothes. The Santa Dash was fantastic, there were
lots of pupils and staff dashing down the drive.''
