Back to school - and oh what a difference to what it was like when the Grandparents were children.
The day began with registration and then straight into assembly.
The assembly was taken by 3S (7 - 8 year old children - or Junior
1!) who highlighted the changes which have taken place in teaching
and learning over the years. Children today can not do some of the
things which their grandparents took for granted when they were
young - conkers, marbles etc - all because of Health and Safety
rules! Of course children today have many things which grandparents
did not have access to - particularly TVs, videos, playstations,
internet. Many children can't imagine what life would be like
without google - but it is only 10 years old.
After a good sing-a-long the grandparents relaxed over coffee
and scones before gong on a guided tour of the Grade 1 listed Hall
or into lessons with their grandchildren. Some struggled with the
spelling tests and the speed of the mental arithmetic tests. In one
class there was fierce competition between the grandparents in the
Quiz.
Lunch time gave the grandparents time to draw breath and enjoy
their fish, chips and peas followed by apple pie and cream. Whilst
eating they were entertained by some of the Senior school pupils on
the piano, guitar and flute.
At 13.30 the grandparents were due back in classes with their
grandchildren for another experience of 21st Century
teaching and learning.
At the end of each day the pupils have e3 activities which are
exciting extensions and enrichment of the normal curriculum. One
activity many pupils have been in is Oliver and grandparents
watched extracts before the end of their day. The performance the
children put on was polished but above all it was clear to see that
they were all happy doing what they were doing.
Happiness is of paramount importance and after another cup of
tea and cake the grandparents went home happy and contented having
learnt what school is like today.
Comments from Grandparents
'I just wanted to express my thanks for the enjoyable
Grandparents' Day yesterday. It was the first one I have
attended and found it both informative and fun. My granddaughter
enjoyed having me there.
I look forward to future opportunities of visiting the school.
My thanks, too, to all those involved in catering and serving. We
were certainly well fed.'

'Just a note to say thank you to all the staff and pupils
involved in Grandparents' Day. I had a most enjoyable day, it
was lovely to see the children 'in action' and to be looked
after so well. I know a lot of work and thought had gone into
making the day so special'
