History

In the Senior School all pupils study History Key Stage 3. At the end of Year 9 many pupils opt to continue with History at Key Stage 4. The History Department was praised for its high standards in the last ISA Inspection. 20

Aims

  • To increase the pupils' capacity to evaluate evidence from the past and encourage them to use historical sources critically
  • To encourage pupils to undertake independent research using a variety of sources including the School's VLE, Internet, libraries, oral History etc.
  • To deploy a variety of methods including simulation, drama, role play, debates, mock trials etc. to promote active learning.


Indipendent Learning Tasks
Years 7-9 undertake various Independent Learning Tasks related to the course content. Pupils are encouraged to add their own sources to their work. Extension Work is also set for all, especially able pupils. This sometimes involved local History, such as a church or castle investigation.

Trips and Activities
The Department has organized trips to Museums such as the Leeds Armouries.

Every Child Matters
An understanding of the past is essential if we are to learn from our mistakes and progress.

Every individual pupil has strengths. These should be identified and nurtured. If a pupil experiences difficulties then they will receive encouragement and support.

Examination results
At the end in 2007 the History results surpassed the successes of previous years by attaining 90% A/A* grades. 10% gained B grades. 100% A/* - B.

Consistently excellent Coursework marks have been achieved with some pupils gaining full marks. The History Moderator praised the 'outstanding work of the pupils' Popular revision courses have been offered to help pupils at Key Stage 4.
