The English Department works in a partnership with pupils and parents to nurture and develop a variety of skills, spoken and written, to promote clear expression and thought. Pupils explore language through creativity, performance, and analysis. We encourage pupils to study a verity of challenging texts and develop independent and discerning critical skills. We want our pupils to communicate effectively in written and spoken forms, listening sensitively to others and writing with accuracy and clarity. At Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9) our scheme of work generally follows the National Curriculum. Pupils are assessed using a verity of means, including the Edinburgh Reading Test, MidYIS and past SATs papers, although we do not subject the pupils to public examinations in Key Stage 3.
We encourage creative writing in a verity of ways, including poetry and genre based work. Pupils take G.C.S.E.'s in English and English Literature and the Department has maintained a proud record of attaining excellent results across the ability range.
