Enterprise Day -- Friday 27th June 2008

Why is enterprise important?

The more enterprising a young person is, the more successful he/she will be, and so increase his/her employment opportunities.

Enterprise is a set of skills people have at various levels across a continuum.

An entrepeneur will have and use many enterprising skills.

The aim of Enterprise Day

The aim is to introduce pupils in Years 9 and 10 to the concept of business management and enterprise. The focus will be on providing a hands on learning experience through which pupils will be:

  • working to budgets
  • working as a team
  • meeting deadlines
  • problem solving
  • developing self-confidence
  • practising risk taking
  • coming up with new ideas
  • communicating with others
  • developing an understanding of economics and business
  • focussing on employability

By experiencing the Enterprise Day pupils will be relating the curriculum to the world of work. Pupils will demonstrate their learning by presenting their product and communicating the process in their teams.

The task

The task is to produce a T shirt with the emphasis being on the environment and linking in the theme of recycling. The idea of fashion with a conscience will be at the centre of the thinking. The pupils will be given a package of materials to work with. The pupils will work in teams each of which will divide into separate groups. One group will focus on the financial side of the business; a second group will be in charge of marketing and the third will actually make the product. They will all have to work as a team and will have to present their product at the end of the day using a powerpoint presentation.
